The Kapuskasing DWD Flyers opened training camp this past weekend with record attendance numbers and a lot of competition for the remaining spots on this year club. A grand total of 67 players attended in hopes of cracking the roster. Head coach Cory Marchand mentioned how impressed he was with the numbers and the level of talent. “ When you have that many players with that much individual talent, it definitely makes for good debates and conversations between the staff” said Marchand.
“As tough as is was on us, in the end we selected the players we felt fit the roles we needed the most” he added.
The team now focuses their attention towards the Northern Showcase this weekend in Kapuskasing when they will face the Timmins Majors and New Liskeard Cubs for a couple of games.
“It’s a weekend that will help us all to get to know each other, as much the players will get to know each other, we will get to know the players.”
Marchand knows the task ahead is huge, especially after the Flyers had a disappointing season in 2014-2015 but he has confidence in his group and knows they will compete. “I look at the players we have in our room and I feel comfortable saying we will challenge for a top spot in this league. We want to be that team that nobody wants to play against” he added
“Our best players will provide leadership and a high compete level but we don’t want to rely on just one or two players to provide offense or solid defensive play. We have depth on this club and we will look at all players to contribute, that’s how we will become a team and play a team game”
