2015 TELUS Cup - Message From MidgetAAACanada.com President Rick Virag
- Submitted by

Dear Hockey Community,

Once again another exciting season has come to an end.

Congratulations the Toronto Young Nationals of the GTHL (Ontario) on winning the 2015 TELUS Cup!

It's a memory you carry with you for the rest of your lives!

Having attended my fair share of TELUS Cups, it has been the experience I have treasured watching the passion of amateur hockey and dreams being realized!

Gold Medalists: Toronto Young Nationals

In their first game the Nationals were shelacked 7-2 by the Regina Pat Canadians who dominated the entire week of the round robin going undefeated with a 4-1-0 record.

Then they defeated the Newbridge Academy Gladiators (Atlantic Reps) 5-2 in their second game and a narrow 3-2 win against the host team, Les Albatros de College Notre Dame.

Game four saw them fall 4-1 to their eventual opponent in the Gold Medal game, Les Grenadiers de Chateauguay and in their final round robin game on Friday, they lost 5-3 against the UFA/Strathmore Bisons (Pacific Reps).

WIth a record of 2-3-0, one wouldn't think that they would eventually beat the Regina Pat Canadians in the semifinals and go on to a decisive victory in the Gold Medal game in their 6-2 win, but THEY DID!

The playoff MVP was definitely their goaltender Dalton Ewing who picked up the 1st star in both their semifinal and the Gold Medal game.

Dalton was the MidgetAAACanada.com National and Ontario Goaltender of the Month for the final month of the regular season and you can CLICK HERE  see his EXCLUSIVE MidgetAAACanada.com interview by Michael Grange of Rogers.

One thing that really stood out to me as a former 13 year head coach was the fact that even though he was a little discouraged about his "draft status", his confidence was through the roof!

Now EVERYONE knows what kind of clutch goaltender he is. His story reminds me of a conversation I had with NHL superstar goaltender Marty Turco at the TELUS Cup in Sault Ste. Marie.

Marty backstopped his team to a medal in his TELUS Cup appearance, he too was discouraged about being passed over, but always kept the faith and had confidence in his abilities and look what happened to his career!

If you asked Dalton, he would surely give credit to his teammates and I'm sure his teammates would deflect the credit back to him, but we wanted to give him the credit he deserves and we're sure his teammates and coaches would agree with our special nod recognizing his stellar play when his team needed him most!

As they say, great goaltending wins championships and this case serves as self evident! Great job Dalton!

Silver Medalists: Les Grenadiers de Chateuaguay (LDHMAAAQ/QC)

Les Grenadiers are the #2 team in Canada and it's an honour I'm sure they're proud of, regardless of the fact that they lost out on winning Gold.

Chateauguay started out the tournament with a 5-3 win over the UFA/Strathmore Bisons (PAC), but then got blanked in game two by the red hot Regina Pat Canadians 5-0.

They bounced back with a 5-2 win over the Newbridge Academy Gladiators (ATL) and then defeated their future Gold Medal game opponents, the Toronto Young Nationals, 4-1, in their game four.

In their final game of the round robin they beat their league rivals 6-2, TELUS Cup hosts, Les Albatros de College Notre Dame.

Then in their semifinal match up with the UFA/Strathmore Bisons, they putting a hurting on the Pacific representatives with a decisive 7-1 win to earn their Gold Medal game berth.

Congratulations on a stellar season!

Bronze Medalists: Regina Pat Canadians

The Regina Pat Canadians surely looked like they were ready to steamroll the entire field with commanding wins four days in a row during the round robin and then a hickup 3-3 tie in game five.

They started the week with a big 7-2 win over the Toronto Young Nationals followed by a 5-0 blanking of Les Grenadiers de Chateauguay in their second game.

They doubled up on the UFA/Strathmore Bisons 4-2 in game three and then doubled up on the hosts, Les Albatros de College Notre Dame.

The round robin ended for them with a 3-3 against a determined and winless Newbridge Academy Gladiators.

Their semifinal match was their upset as the eventual Gold Medal winners, Toronto Young Nationals, delivered a dissapointing blow to the undefeated Pat Canadians with a 3-1 decision.

They went on to beat the UFA/Strathmore Bisons in the Bronze Medal game to take the hardware home.

Bottom line, great season! Not as great as they may have hoped for, but great nonetheless. Great job boys!

4th Place: UFA/Strathmore Bisons

Congratulations to the UFA/Strathmore Bisons on a great season capturing both the Alberta Midget Hockey League league championship and Pacific Regional Championship defeating the BCMML Champions.

Their 2015 TELUS Cup journey started with a 5-3 loss in their first game to the Silver Medalists Les Grenadiers de Chateauguay.

Game two saw them bounce back with a commanding 7-1 win against the host team, Les Albatros de College Notre Dame, but then fell to the red hot and undefeated Regina Pat Canadians who doubled up on them 4-2.

Then in game four the Bisons then tripled up on the Atlantic Reps, Newbridge Academy Gladiators 6-2 and then in game five of the round robin, they beat the eventual Gold Medalists Toronto Young Nationals by a score of 5-3.

Unfortunately in the semifinals, they lost again to Les Grenadiers de Chateauguay by a score of 7-1.

The Bronze Medal game started out with Regina scoring unanswered goals, but the Bisons answered back with two unanswered goals themselves making it 3-2 at the end of the 1st period.

In the second period, the Pat Canadians score two unanswered goals  making it 5-2, but then in the third the Bisons scored early at 2:47 to bring them within two at 5-3.

Then Regina answered back to make it 6-3 and that's how it ended.

Again, congrats on a great season.

5th Place: Les Albatros de College Notre Dame (Host)

Les Albatros de College Notre Dame started out their TELUS Cup run with an exciting 4-0 win blanking the Newbridge Academy Gladiators.

Game two saw them get dominated by the UFA/Strathmore Bisons 7-1 and then in game three they lost a very close game 3-2 where the Toronto Young Nationals were victors.

In game four, the Regina Pat Canadians doubled up on Les Albatros 6-3 and then in their final game they lost 6-2 to Les Grenadiers de Chateuguay 6-2.

All in all, we're sure it was a great experience for their team and the city of Riviere de Loop.

Sixth Place: Newbridge Academy Gladiators

The Atlantic representatives started the week out with a 4-0 loss to Les Albatros de College Notre Dame (Host), followed by a 5-2 loss to the Toronto Young Nationals (CENTRAL).

Game three saw the Gladiators fall to Les Grenadiers de Chateuaguay (QUEBEC) 5-2 and then a 6-2 loss to the UFA/Strathmore Bisons (PACIFIC) in game four.

Their final game of the tournament turned out to be their best as they faced the undefeated Regina Pat Canadians (WEST). The Gladiators ended up tying the Pat Canadians 3-3 in a back an forth game that certainly gave Regina a run for their money!

Bottom line, They were NSMMHL champions and then Atlantic Regional champions, so their season like the other TELUS Cup participants came with a lot to celebrate about.

In conclusion, all teams who participated in the tournament whether they took home hardware or not, accomplished a huge amount this year and were priveliged to experience the pride of representing their region and gained memories that will last a lifetime!

Good luck to all teams and players next season and have a GREAT summer!!!
